List of Black codes:
-Race was defined by blood; the presence of any amount of black blood made one black. -Employment was required of all freedmen; violators faced vagrancy charges. -Freedmen could not assemble without the presence of a white person. -Freedmen were assumed to be agricultural workers and their duties and hours were tightly regulated. -Freedmen were not to be taught to read or write. -Public facilities were segregated. -Violators of these laws were subject to being whipped or branded. |

The Black codes went after effect after the American Civil War 1865-1866.
The two main states to put the laws in effect were Mississippi and South Carolina. The Laws passed in the United States to limit the human rights and common freedoms of blacks. They controlled the work and movement of the slaves. Blacks are required to work. They were obliged to have composed evidence of job. They were required to sign yearly work contracts: if not signed they were arrested or fined. Blacks were able to purchase and own property. They could also get married. |
